Kenya vs Tanzania: Which Safari Is Right for You?
It is the question every first-time safari traveller eventually asks: Kenya or Tanzania? Both share the same Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, both offer the Big Five, and both have been hosting international safari guests for decades. But they are not the same experience — and the right answer depends entirely on what you are looking for.
The Case for Kenya
The Maasai Mara and the Migration
The northern end of the Great Migration plays out in the Mara from July to October — the famous river crossings happen here. Kenya also offers private conservancies bordering the main reserve where off-road driving, night drives, and walking safaris are permitted.
Diversity of Destinations
Kenya bundles extraordinary variety into a compact geography. Amboseli for elephant herds under Kilimanjaro. Samburu for the rare northern species — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx. Lake Nakuru for flamingos and black rhino. The Laikipia Plateau for community conservancies.
Infrastructure and Accessibility
Nairobi is one of Africa's best-connected hubs. Domestic flights to the Mara take under an hour. Kenya works especially well for shorter safari windows of 5 to 8 days.
The Case for Tanzania
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro
Tanzania's Serengeti is larger, wilder, and less visited per square kilometre than the Mara. The Ngorongoro Crater — a collapsed volcanic caldera — holds one of the highest densities of wildlife on earth within its 260 km² bowl. Both are essential safari destinations.
Zanzibar and the Beach Extension
Tanzania offers the most seamless safari-to-beach combination in East Africa. A 45-minute flight from the Serengeti drops you onto the white sand shores of Zanzibar — no long transfer, no awkward connection. Kenya's coastal options are good but require more travel.
The Calving Season
From January to March, over half a million wildebeest calves are born on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti. It is a predator spectacular unlike anything else in Africa — and the Serengeti is where it happens.
