July & August — The River Crossings

This is it. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras surge across the crocodile-filled Mara River in one of the most dramatic wildlife events on earth. Expect full camps, premium pricing, and moments you will never forget. Book at least 6 months in advance.

September & October — Big Cat Action

The migration herds are still present and the predator activity reaches its peak. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards are active and well-fed. The light in October is especially beautiful for photography — golden hour lasts longer and the skies are dramatic.

What to Expect in Peak Season

Higher rates and fuller camps are the trade-off for the spectacle. We recommend private conservancies bordering the Mara — Mara North, Olare Motorogi, and Naboisho — where game drives are exclusive and off-road driving is permitted.

January & February — Calving Season

Over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in a six-week window on the Serengeti plains. This draws predators in extraordinary numbers and the action is relentless. The Mara itself is quieter and rates are lower — this is one of the best-kept secrets in East African safari.

March — Lush Landscapes and Fewer Crowds

The short rains bring the landscape to vivid life. Birdlife is exceptional, resident wildlife is abundant, and you will share the park with far fewer vehicles. Ideal for repeat visitors who have already seen the migration.

April & May — The Long Rains

Heavy rainfall can make some tracks impassable. Several camps close for maintenance. For intrepid travellers, the rewards are real: rates drop significantly, the Mara is almost entirely yours, and the landscape is extraordinarily green.

June — The Transition Month

Rains ease off and the first wildebeest begin moving north from the Serengeti. By late June, the advance herds reach the Mara Triangle. A late June arrival can give you the first river crossings at a fraction of the July price.
